Getting the Proper Diagnosis (Symptoms Guide to print out for their Physician)Getting the Proper Diagnosis (Symptoms Guide to print out for their Physician)

The process of diagnosing fibromyalgia can be quite frustrating due largely in part to its varied symptoms. There are no tests that a doctor can perform to diagnose the condition, rather a doctor must rely on the symptoms presented by the patient. Much has been done to ease the process, but for many it is still a long road from the initial presentation of symptoms to the final diagnosis.

The Confusion of Symptoms
Many of the symptoms associated with fibromyalgia set off a whole host of alarm bells in a doctor’s head. Tests for rheumatoid arthritis, cancer, multiple sclerosis, and kidney problems are often suggested. While this may seem scary it is oftentimes a necessary part of the diagnostic process. By ruling out other conditions with similar symptoms doctors take one step closer to properly diagnosing fibromyalgia. Upon diagnosis, it is best to start some form of treatment immediately, enabling the management of fibromyalgia.

Diagnosing Fibromyalgia – What you can do
Since your doctor is relying on your symptoms to make a diagnosis, you need to be as clear as possible when talking with him or her. Here are some tips that will help you work with your doctor to get the proper diagnosis.

  • Communicate Openly – Try to figure out the best way to describe your symptoms. Ask your doctor questions about the diagnostic process, including why each test is done. Contact others who have fibromyalgia and ask about their symptoms and how they finally were given the proper diagnosis.
  • Take Notes – Since the process of diagnosing fibromyalgia often goes on for over a year, and usually involves several doctors, it is important that you keep good records of your visits and also get a copy of each test results.
  • Educate Yourself – The more you know about fibromyalgia the more aware you will be of what is going on in your body. With a better understanding of what fibromyalgia is you can learn how your body reacts to different situations, and live a full and happy life.
  • Create a Network – Oftentimes the most important thing is to have support. This starts with having a health care professional who is willing to work with you on a more personal level in managing your fibromyalgia. You can also network with others who have fibromyalgia and share experiences, stories, and advice for dealing with this condition.
